Christmas in Mayfield: The Christmas Fayre

The spirit of Christmas or perhaps or to be more precise the spirit of winter was in evidence on the day of this year’s Mayfield’s Church Christmas Fayre on Saturday 2nd Dec; for it was the coldest day so far recorded this year! Mayfield woke up to a temperature of -8.5C which rose to a balmy -2.5C at midday amongst heavy winter fog and frost which covered the village in a gentle icy white coating.

However, such chilly weather conditions did not put off residents from Mayfield and beyond coming together to enjoy our annual Church Christmas fayre. There were 8 stalls in the church itself selling Christmas items as well as other craft items where a steady stream of customers were delighted with what they saw and purchased happily,

From Christmas wreaths to Christmas crackers, organic soaps and toiletries through to lovely little Gonks and beautiful items carved from wood, amongst many others. The chill of winter, as people arrived at the church door was replaced by the warmth of a delicious cup of Andrew’s mulled wine!

Meanwhile all things foodie was on display in the church rooms, with savoury and sweet items as well as delicious homemade cakes. This was the place to come and chat whilst you had your coffee and biscuits and purchased your raffle tickets, both for the amazing hamper and other prizes donated by parish members as well as the chance to win a beautiful fully iced Christmas cake. And after all that there was Barbara Cole’s famous lucky dip where everyone was a winner and customers of all ages eagerly opened their lucky dip items to see just what they had won.

The Christmas fair both raised much needed funds for our church but also acted as a community event bringing parishioners and villagers together and giving everyone a chance to acquire some real homemade Christmas goodies both for presents and in terms of those cakes, to be eaten long before Christmas!

Our sincere thanks to everyone who took part in organising and volunteering for the fair as well as all the people who displayed and sold their homemade craft goods in the church; and of course to everyone who came and spent so generously,
